I Dar is the motto on the family coat of arms for the Scottish
clan Dalziel [shown on the right] and roughly translates,
from the original Old Scots, to 'I Dare'.

The name originates from around the Motherwell area of Lanarkshire
in south-west Scotland and has several alternate spellings,
including Dalziell, Dalzell and Dalyell.
The Dalziel spelling is still commonplace in the area,
represented by a number of businesses
and the well known Dalziel High School

The Dalziel name is pronounced as if it were just two consonants 'D-L'.

The International Phonetic Alphabet symbols representing the pronunciation are  shown on the left.

The clan Dalziel's tartan, based on the Logan design, is shown below and dates
from around 1820 when it was produced to honour a visit by King George IV.
